You may have visited many zoos or animal safari, however, you will be shocked to know about the human safari of the Andaman Island where lives the tribe of Jarawa. The travel agents of the Andaman have made watching the Jarawas a tourist attraction, and many people visit there to have a look at them, however, this human safari is to be a disgrace to human dignity, therefore, several NGOs have requested that this human safari must be closed down.

The background:

The Jarawas have been the most isolated population since several thousands of years. They are the tribe that belongs to the Andaman islands. The Jarawas live as hunter-gatherers and they prefer no contact with the mainstream society. This is the reason that they have zero immunity against the diseases of western society.

In 2006, the Jarawasmet with the outbreak of measles which made them devastated. This is also a consequence of forced contact.

Tourism at the Andaman island:

The Jarawa are the first people that migrated to Asia from Africa several thousand years ago. Since then, they live completely in isolation until recently when tourism started in the Indian Ocean Islands and they face now increasing scrutiny due to the visitors.

The trunk road that tour operators used for the purpose of taking the visitors to the island were an observation point to watch as well as film the people of Jarwas in their forest. This road brought the daily invasion of several hundred tourists to the forest of Jarawa reserve while treating their people as animals of a safari park.

Tourists visit the areas in order to see the Jarawa people, indulging in this human safari which is a pure disgrace to human dignity. They are also human beings and they do not have to be looked like animals. Moreover, the human safaris have been very dangerous for the Jarawas as one boy lost his arm when a tourist threw food at him from the moving car as he was reaching for it. Other than that, the tourists do sexual exploitation of the women of Jarawaby asking them to dance in exchange for food and also make them at a greater risk to develop fatal diseases.

The legal restrictions:

After the protests of various campaigners, the Indian Supreme Court decided that the trunk road will be closed down and a new sea route will be developed around the islands which will keep the tourists away from the Andaman island. However, the road remains open and the order is not taken seriously.

Moreover, a warning has been released by the Andaman island’s government that the tourism offers based on the Jarawa people is illegal. The tour operators must refrain from listing human safari as a tourist attraction. Since this is an insult of human dignity and it also put the people at the stake because the Jarawasdo does not have immunity against common illnesses of the world. However, the same government insist on keeping the trunk road open though it has been ordered to close down.

Overview of the town. credits: flickr

It is a underground city in Australia. In this city, actual people live and serve as the miners. The city is also called ‘Opal Capital of the world’. The city is very fascinating due to the co-existence of mines with shops, homes, and restaurants. Apart from mining, the reason behind this city is to get shelter from extreme heat of Sothern Australia. Despite of being underground, this is a pretty amazing, cozy and friendly place. There is also a graveyard and church in that area.

If you find the picture above is creepy or even scary, no worries, it is just a sculpture. This sculpture is called momo, an artistic rendition of Japanese folklore monster, created by artists Aisawa Keisuke. The creepy face is now the poster girl of the infamous “Momo challenge”, so what exactly is this Momo challenge.

What exactly is Momo challenge?

Having taken roots in Japan, the challenge is now running rampant throughout social media and communication app such as WhatsApp. Users who wish to participate this challenge have to call an untraceable number obtained on various social media website, upon calling the number, Momo will establish a video call instead. Depends on the user, Momo will either instruct the user directly through the video call or through WhatsApp text. Instructions for odd challenges such as waking up at odd hour, subsequently instructions of self-mutilation and finally suicide. According to a YouTuber, Mind Seed TV, Momo established a video call. Finding out that the YouTuber is a full grown adult, the call ended, but the creepiness did not end there. Momo sent a WhatsApp text to Mind Seed TV, claiming that she knows he is in Florida and she will soon visit him, Momo then blocked Mind Seed TV on WhatsApp, no other known instructions have been given.

Actual Momo video on YouTube, uploaded on 27 February 2019, which does not tally with the origin of the challenge.

According to many social media post, the Momo challenge mainly targets children or early teenagers and they have to film the attempts and sending it back to Momo through WhatsApp. Refuse to complete the challenge, Momo will then threaten to hurt or kill the user, same will be done if the child or teenager attempt to report this to the parents or authorities. Sometimes Momo sends pictures of scary monsters and scene grotesque accident, it was made even creepier that Momo can tell where you are located and even who are your friends and family.

Similar to another incident called “The blue whale challenge” back in 2015, a challenge that many Russian teenagers took part and ended their lives. It is not a surprise that these challenges are targeted at children because it is very likely that children will be so traumatised and then adhere to Momo’s demand. However, this is where we start to see the oddities in the whole Momo challenge incident.

How it all started

Other than the exhibition held in Tokyo, in the year 2016, the first-mentioned cased of Momo challenge was on July 2018, on Reddit forum user named “r/creepy”, a subReddit dedicated for creepy stories and images. It went viral for a while and had since gone under the radar, until February 2019. Random phone numbers were found online and curiosity caught the better of younger users, now it is a dangerous phenomenon.

The real momo, called “Mother Bird”, a sculpture created by artist Aisawa Keisuke. Credit to Instagram user j_s_rock and between.mirrors.

Picking it apart

This is the part of the story that starts to fall apart. The users are supposed to film the attempts on all the challenges and sending it to Momo, this means that there are online activities and exchanges of content. Anyone who are well aware of the internet, or even people who are not sure how internet works, anything that goes online can be found somewhere. If that content is something so grotesque, disgusting and dangerous, we should be able to see it somewhere online, especially this challenge is supposed to be completed and sent to Momo online. What is interesting is that we did not even come close to see a trace of such content online or circulated through online communication app, despite the fact that anything can spread online like wild fire, faster than you would imagined.

Another oddity of the Momo challenge is the timeline of its viral video. It is unclear when is the exact date that such trend went viral, but many people and news outlet assumed to be around early February. However, if you look at all the possible search results on YouTube or any other search engines, the uploaded date ranges between late February and early March. Not only that, the videos of Momo threatening you are different from one another, there isn’t a similarity to the nature of the videos rather than creeping audiences out. Lack of similarity and incorrect upload date immediately rings some alert bell if you analyse them systematically.

Assumed that such challenge has done its damage, we should see public outcry and outrage from the parents and everyone who cares. However, other than some concerns shown on news outlet and tabloid outlet, there isn’t a large number of credible report of Momo challenge. There was one reported case in Bueno Aires Times, a 12-year-old girl committed suicide, and authorities are investigating if her death was inspired by the Momo challenge.

This is also another oddity, in early 2018, the world was shocked by the “Tide pod challenge”. Tide pod challenge is a simple challenge game that participant eating a tide pod, a form of laundry product. Just in January 2018 alone, U.S has more than 37 reported cases of teenagers eating tide pod and sent to the hospital. Public, parents, in particular, were enraged at such a dangerous act being viral online, some even encouraging others to follow suit. Yet, we have not seen similar outrage regarding the “Momo challenge” on the date of writing this article. It does spark the credibility of such a challenge even exist.

The danger still remains

Despite the credibility of the Momo challenge, the danger it possesses is still real and this is why. Parents or adults who are responsible for their phone, you need to ensure you don’t auto download any pictures or videos onto your phone, a common tactic used by the hacker. Any anonymous sources that you don’t trust send you anything can contain malware, this allows the other end user to embed it into your phone, allowing the hacker access to everything inside your phone, even remote access it and your input to your phone will be ignored. Once it gains access to your social media, GPS and other important feature, the hacker can determine where you are and who are your friends and family, exactly the same tactic used by Momo mentioned above. The scary thing is that the accuracy is extremely high, there are some cases in Taiwan where criminals made use of the information to abduct children from parents, by determining what time the parents send their child to school and the address of their school.

Even though Momo is not real and the challenge may not be real as well, but there are people who imitate the Momo challenge and ride on the wave, attempting to gain some form of notoriety, and this kind of imitation is not uncommon in history. Internet users have to take extra care of such notoriety seekers.

Parents also have to be aware of your children’s entertainment, educate your children about internet safety. The Momo challenge is extremely suggestive towards children, and typically children are more open to psychological suggestion, that is why children and teenagers are more vulnerable towards this dangerous challenge. Also, as children nowadays are more active online, but there is not enough education about internet safety, parents should be well aware of what can be potential scams or even dangerous challenges like the Momo challenge, ensuring that your children don’t become a victim of such activities.

Life is precious, please treasure them

Having said that, it is all speculation and my own inductions, it does not reflect the actual findings from the authorities. At the same time, we do not condone self-mutilation and suicide, we condemn such act and anyone who even suggested it to another individual. If you know someone or yourself, are suffering from self-harm or having thoughts of suicide, please talk to someone else to ease yourself, or you can contact the following numbers to seek professional help. Tokyo, one of the biggest and most populated cities in Asia, most certainly one of the most iconic location in Japan. From the crowded but orderly peak hour train, to the maid cafes in Akihabara, Tokyo has shown it can be anything that you can or cannot imagine. Having said that, it also includes food that were ridiculously delicious that you might even rethink about your life. Let me bring you to some of the places to rethink your life.

1. Sushi no midori

Sushi is one of the most iconic Japanese cuisine and there are many of them across the entire country. However, there is one sushi franchise that provided the strongest impression to me, that restaurant is called “Sushi no Midori”. Sushi no Midori has shops in several places around Tokyo and Aichi prefecture, they even opened two restaurant outlets in Hong Kong as well. The shop we visited are located in the fourth floor of Shibuya Mark City, right opposite the JR Shibuya Station.

Even the regular salmon sushi look extremely exquisite.

Klook.com

What really caught many people’s eyes is the incredible freshness of the fishes and other ingredients. You can literally taste the natural sweetness in the raw fish, if you are having the fatty tuna or salmon belly, it will melt in your mouth, leaving only a small tint of the smell of the sea. I would recommend the kaisen-don, the seafood bowl, which you are given the luxury of their best raw fish and in large amount as well. Even their uni, the sea urchins, taste so incredibly fresh and sweet, there isn’t a smallest scent of fishiness in it, proving that the chefs are highly skilled and understand the ingredient fully to bring out the natural taste.

One of the few things that will make you rethink life itself, the premium eel sushi.

One of the most exquisite and delicious sushi in this restaurant, it has to be the premium eel sushi. The eel is shining with the oily glaze and sauce, the fragrance of the BBQ-ed eel slowly enters your nose, stimulating your desire to eat it. Upon putting the eel sushi in your mouth, the tenderness, the freshness and the sweetness of the eel fused into something, along with the rice, into something you can never imagine,

2. Afuri

Afuri, sitting at multiple location around Japan. This outlet is situated in Senganja-ya.

Ramen, one of the most competitive dish in Japan if not THE most competitive dish. Walking down the street and you would be able to spot at least five different ramen shops. In order to stand out from one another, some shops have special kind of ramen instead of the typical pork-based soup ramen, Afuri is exactly that kind of shop. The outlet that we visited is located in Sangenja-ya, not very far away from Shibuya.

Chicken with yuzu broth, tangy noodles, leaving you wanting for more.

Restaurants being spread all over Japan, Afuri’s signature is their Yuzu soup. It is chicken based broth, simmered with yuzu and accompanied with tangy noodle, egg, beetroot and cha-shu. Customers can pick either the shio (salt) or shoyu (Japanese soy sauce) flavour, I picked shio flavour as salt is the best kind of condiment to already delicious ramen. Upon my ramen being served, the fragrance of yuzu emitting out of the soup elevated my soul, all fatigues immediately being lifted away. The perfect combination of the yuzu, chicken broth and salt provided a less oily but strong taste. The noodles are also being handled well enough to retain the tanginess but not overly hard.

Seeing that they also serve roasted pork belly rice and smelling the incredible smell of it, I couldn’t hold onto it and ordered one serving and I wasn’t disappointed by it. The pork fat and the meat itself melts in your mouth, it is in chunk, so children will have no problem enjoying it. The shredded radish gives you a fresh taste and washes away the oily taste that may stay in your mouth.

3. Mutekiya

More than a few dozen hungry customers waiting outside Mutekiya

Let us go to another Ramen restaurant that serves the completely opposite and perfected the pork-based broth, Mutekiya. Surprisingly, Mutekiya has only one shop in Ikubukuro, they stated in their website and other medium that any other “Mutekiyas” are not related to them and this is their only registered shop.

Mutekiya are friendly to tourists and foreigners as well, they even have a list of suggested items if you visit the restaurant for the first time. Despite not my first visit, I still ordered the most popular and my favourite in their menu, “Mutekiya Ramen Nikutama”. This bowl of ramen comes with thick but soft roasted pork, boiled eggs and bamboo shoots. It is not exaggerating that I say thick, the roast pork slices are really thick, but not tough. The taste of pork-based broth has never been so good, it is extremely thick and not oily even if you drink it to the last drop. The noodles are satisfyingly tangy, you will be craving for more. The gyoza that they serve are some of the best that I have ever tasted as well.

Address:

4. Ajikura

Sitting in a back alley between many love hotels and clubs, Ajikura can be missed easily. Credit to Google Street View.

If you are looking for something to fulfil your carnivorous desire, the best food will be BBQ meat. There is one special restaurant in the back alley of Shibuya, surrounded by clubs and love hotels. This restaurant is called Lorem Ipsom, located just right below Bar Armageddon. We came across this restaurant by pure luck, attracted by the smell of BBQ meat and charcoal, we entered the restaurant and immediately noticed the first unique feature of the place. Most of the employees are South East Asians, some of them came from Bangladesh and some even come from India, all of them are fluent in Japanese and English too, so there will not be a problem if you are a foreigner who does not speak Japanese.

The fats in the beef literally glimmer under the light.
The fragrance from the BBQ meat and charcoal really is something to behold.
There is no better combination than BBQ meat and Japanese highball.

The variation of Kobe beef, pork meat and chicken meat, we decided to go for the A3 Kobe beef, pork collar and pork belly meat, and this was a decision well made. The meat was served up, and it is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. The oil pattern on the beef is extremely balanced and it even glimmers when the light hit the meat, the pork belly and collar meat seemed normal when it was served. When the meat was placed on the BBQ mesh, that was when the magic happened, incredibly fragrant smell rushes through your nose to your brain. When you put the meat into your mouth, the deliciousness of the meat immediately made me rethink life itself. Accompanied by the Japanese highball, nothing can be compared with this BBQ meat.

“Kame-Hame-Ha!!!!”

“It’s over 9000!!!”

If any of those lines remind you anything from your childhood, you probably picture a man with somewhat spiky hairstyle and spend the next 30 minutes shouting at the top of his lungs. Yes, it is none other than the legendary “Dragon Ball”

Dragon Ball, a loose anime and comic adaptation of the Chinese classic “Journey to the West”, created by Akira Toriyama. “Dragon Ball” follows a young boy named Son Goku and his journey to become stronger and collect dragon balls. It is a very simple story when Dragon Ball first started, more intriguing characters were eventually added into the story, spawned two sequel anime series and a non-canon anime sequel to the original, “Dragon Ball Z” from 1989 to 1996, the non-canonical “Dragon Ball GT” from 1996 to 1997 and finally the canonical “Dragon Ball Super” from 2015 to 2018.

Dragon Ball has been known for the exhilarating fights that might end the universe, excessive shouting and odd-ball humour. However, those are simply the face value of Dragon Ball. Deep down, the characters are the most interesting component of the series. Characters that turned from evil to family man, characters that stays charismatic and evil at the same time and main character stays the same throughout the series, we literally grow along with the characters. I always remember when I was watching “Dragon Ball” as a child, now I am in my adulthood, Son Goku has also grown into a grandfather in the story. Goku stays the same kind hearted character ever since the first episode, still thinks like a child despite being an adult, consistently curious of new things and people, strong fighters especially.

Crowds gathered at Public Square to witness the final battle of Dragon Ball Super, in multiple Latin America cities.

Spanning across 30 years, affected people of two generations and still counting. In March of 2018, on the pinnacle of the final saga in “Dragon Ball Super”, which is named “Tournament of Power”, many cities throughout Latin America had requested for the rights to broadcast the final three episodes in their city square. Surprisingly, Toei Animation agreed to the request and officially broadcasted the final two episodes in the public square, episode 130 and 131 respectively. Countries such as Mexico, Argentina, El Salvador, Ecuador and Nicaragua attracted thousands of people to witness the final match of the tournament, Mexico alone attracted more than 30 000 people to watch together in the square. When Goku’s team won the tournament, fans cheered as if their country has won the Soccer World Cup.

Not only that, Dragon Ball proves that it is still the king of action anime, especially in Japan. According to a Japanese website, Video Research LTD, ever since the broadcasting of “Dragon Ball Super”, it has been competing in the top 10 TV rating with another famous anime, “One Piece”. Despite that both shows has rating very close to one another, “Dragon Ball Super” episode 94 finally surpassed “One piece” and subsequent few more episodes. For a anime series that ended in the late 1990s to compete with its successor, “Dragon Ball Super” has shown that it still has a lot of attraction to the newer and younger audiences. The massive public showing of the final three episodes in Latin America has also shown that “Dragon Ball” is not just a local Japanese pop culture, it is a global phenomenon that shows no sign of stopping.

On third week of June, Dragon Ball Super had surpassed One Piece. Credit to Video Research LTD.

Just a little shy of one month ago, the latest Dragon Ball Super film got released in the United States of America and many other countries in both English dubbing and Japanese dubbing. The fan favourite non-canonical character, Broly, finally made canon by Akira Toriyama himself. Fans are loving the film for everything it has done to the story telling, animation and characters, I personally watched the film three times in the cinema. According to IMDB, the estimated budget of “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” was about eight and a half million dollars. As of the end of January 2019, the film has garnered more than 88 million dollars, making it the highest grossing Dragon Ball film ever.

To me personally, Goku is the perfect role model. He constantly seeks for new excitement, constantly oddball to better himself, staying positive despite kind-hearted the world is heading straight for hell, sometimes even sacrificing his own life to save his family and friends. I am sure that many who has watched or read “Dragon Ball” would think the series has changed their life for the better. I still have the last remain Dragon Ball Z final volume in possession, too bad I have lost most of them throughout the years, I also have several Dragon Ball figurines sitting in my room and office table, reminding me to better myself every single day, challenging myself and maintain curiosity.
